Hydrate & Nourish Your Summer Body

SUMMER SELF-CARE SERIES
Week 3: JUNE 16-22

Summer invites us outside into the warmth and light—but it also brings a unique set of challenges for our bodies and minds. According to Ayurveda, summer is ruled by Pitta dosha, the energy of fire and water. Pitta’s qualities—heat, intensity, sharpness, transformation—are abundant this time of year. While we may feel energized and motivated, we’re also more prone to overheating, irritability, and burnout if we don’t consciously balance that fire.

Our bodies naturally crave hydration, cooling, and lightness in the summer. It’s a season that asks us to nourish with intention—to support our systems with foods, movement, and rituals that restore balance, soothe inflammation, and keep us feeling clear and calm.

At Prana, we’re embracing this seasonal wisdom with yoga practices and wellness rituals designed to hydrate and nourish from the inside out. This week, many of our classes will focus on detoxifying twists, which not only aid digestion and help cool internal heat, but also invite us to release tension and refresh both body and mind.

Alongside your practice, we encourage you to explore simple Ayurvedic rituals that support hydration and nourishment during the hottest months:

  • Favor water-rich, cooling foods. Think juicy melons, hydrating cucumbers, leafy greens, sweet berries, and refreshing herbs like cilantro and mint. These foods naturally pacify Pitta’s heat and replenish the body’s moisture.

  • Sip cool (but not iced) herbal teas throughout the day. Iced drinks may seem tempting, but Ayurveda teaches that they can dampen digestion. Instead, enjoy soothing teas like hibiscus or peppermint, both naturally cooling and supportive of circulation.

  • Slow down and rest. Even with longer days, it’s important to honor the body’s need for downtime. A short afternoon rest, a gentle evening walk, or time in the shade can help restore balance when the day’s heat feels overwhelming.

Want an easy, delicious way to nourish your summer body? Try this cooling and refreshing Hibiscus Detox Tea!

🌺Cooling Hibiscus Mint Detox Tea (Ayurvedic Summer Blend)

Benefits

  • Hibiscus: Cools the body, supports the liver, and helps clear excess heat.

  • Mint: Soothes digestion and adds refreshing flavor.

  • Fennel seeds: Detoxify, aid digestion, and calm the nervous system.

  • Rose petals (optional): Gently uplift the heart and cool the emotions.

  • Lime juice: Adds a tangy brightness and supports liver cleansing.

Ingredients (makes about 4 cups)

  • 2 tablespoons dried hibiscus petals (or 2 hibiscus tea bags)

  • 1 teaspoon fennel seeds

  • 6–8 fresh mint leaves

  • 1 teaspoon dried rose petals (optional)

  • 4 cups water

  • Juice of ½ lime (adjust to taste)

  • 1–2 teaspoons raw honey or maple syrup (optional, and only added once the tea is cool)

Instructions

  1. Boil the water. Once it reaches a boil, turn off the heat.

  2. Add the hibiscus petals, fennel seeds, mint, and rose petals to the hot water.

  3. Cover and steep for 15–20 minutes.

  4. Strain the tea and allow it to cool to room temperature.

  5. Once cooled, stir in the lime juice and sweetener (if using).

  6. Garnish with a sprig of mint or a thin slice of lime.

🌿 Ayurvedic TipS

  • Drink this tea between meals, not with meals, to support digestion.

  • If you’re Vata or Kapha dominant, you can add a tiny pinch of ginger or cinnamon to balance the cooling effect.
